Saturated fat for over 40 years has been talked about in hushed tones, dissed as artery clogging obesity causing poison!?
People wanting to improve their health started buying skimmed milk, low fat yoghurts, eating egg whites, not whole eggs and avoiding steak, pork and butter.
So did it help?, In the last 30 years the amount of calories from fat has fallen while obesity has doubled and heart disease has remained the number one killer, because heart disease and obesity are caused by inactivity, trans fats, refined carbs (refined sugar is a far bigger contributor to heart disease) and overeating, to name a few. And thanks to recent studies from experts the tide is slowly turning and scientists are speaking out about the benefits of fats.
Saturated fats have been shown to have some positive effects on the body, including:
– Liver Health: Saturated fat encourages the liver cells to dump their fat cells, which helps the liver to function more effectively
–Immune System: Saturated fatty acids, especially the kinds found in butter and coconut, help white blood cells to recognize and destroy invading viruses and bacteria.
–Hormones: Eating saturated fat tends to increase free testosterone levels, which helps to repair tissue, preserve muscle, and improve sexual function.
Obviously not all saturated fats are healthy and this is where people need educating.
There is no actual link between eating red meat and heart disease BUT there was for those that ate a lot of processed crappy meat, so drop the hot dog and spend a little more on food. The body loves saturated fat from sources like grass-fed meat and butter, whole eggs, nuts and coconut oil— not hot dogs and pepperoni pizza, by a mile the biggest enemy in our food is refined sugar, which I always tell my clients – eat well, eat natural, avoid processed meats, refined carbs and sugar, don’t over eat and you won’t need to diet!
Now the science is backing this up, so Toss the low fat margarine, low fat everything and buy foods in their natural form, and tuck into a seared grass fed fillet steak with some buttered greens and do your body, immune system and energy levels a favour!!
Of course we shouldn’t over indulge in good saturated fats but we should not avoid them altogether, only avoid the unhealthy ones that are refined and processed.
